Hi there! I understand you're concerned about your dog's kidney health, and it's great that you're seeking information. Kidney disease in dogs is often categorized into four stages, based on the level of kidney function. The stage is typically determined through blood tests and urine analysis that measure specific markers. If your vet has already performed these tests, they can provide a clearer picture of your dog's condition.
For at-home care, ensuring your dog stays hydrated is crucial, so encourage her to drink water regularly. A kidney-friendly diet can also help manage the disease's progression, as these diets are often lower in protein and phosphorus, which can reduce kidney workload and toxin buildup.
Watch for symptoms like decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy, or changes in urination, as these could indicate worsening conditions. In some cases, additional treatments like fluid therapy or medications may be necessary.
The prognosis can vary depending on the disease stage and your dog’s overall health, so regular check-ups with your vet are essential to monitor her condition.
Now would be a good time to book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your dog’s specific needs and help guide you on the next steps for her care.
UPDATE: What stage kidney disease is my dog? What else can I do for her? Prognosis?
I'm here with a bit of an update and to ask for some advice. My sweet girl, Luna, who’s been with me through thick and thin, has been diagnosed with kidney disease. I'm really struggling to understand exactly what stage she's in since her symptoms seem to match a few stages. We’ve seen the vet, and they did some tests, but I still feel in the dark about her prognosis. She's been drinking a lot more water than usual and seems to be losing weight, though her energy is mostly the same, which confuses me more. I’m following the vet's recommendations, but I’m desperate to know if there’s anything else I can do to help her be more comfortable. Also, has anyone had a pup go through this? What should I prepare for? I'm just feeling really overwhelmed and scared for her. Any insight or words of support would mean the world to me. Thanks in advance.
