Question:

UPDATE: I just got a stray kitten, and I think that the place where I live doesn't have veterinarians.

I'm in a bit of a bind and really need some advice. About a week ago, I found a little kitten outside my apartment, obviously stray, and she was just shivering and meowing her heart out. Of course, I couldn't just leave her there, so I brought her inside, gave her some food and warmth, and we've kind of become inseparable since. But here's the kicker: I live in a pretty remote area and I've just realized there aren't any veterinarians nearby, or at least not within a reasonable distance that I can reach without a car. I'm really worried because I have no idea if she's had any vaccinations or if there's anything else she might need health-wise. She seems okay for now – eating, playing, and all – but I don't know what to look out for, and I want to make sure she's healthy. Does anyone here have any advice on what I might be able to do? Maybe you've been in a similar situation or have some tips on basic care I can provide until I figure something out? Any help would be so appreciated.

Answer:

Hello, and welcome! First of all, congratulations on your new furry friend! It’s wonderful that you’ve opened your home to a stray kitten. Kittens can have unique needs, so let's go over a few things to help her settle in comfortably.

Since she’s had a rough start, keep an eye on her overall health. Common concerns for stray kittens include worms, fleas, and respiratory infections. Check if she has a potbelly, which could indicate worms, or if she's scratching a lot, which might mean fleas.

Ensure she has a warm and safe space to relax—it’s crucial as kittens can’t regulate their body temperature well. You can use a soft blanket or a small heating pad set on low. When it comes to food, offer high-quality kitten food with easy access to fresh water. And, of course, lots of love and gentle handling will go a long way!

Watch for warning signs like labored breathing, persistent coughing or sneezing, lack of appetite, or diarrhea, as these might need urgent attention.

While it sounds like vet access might be tricky, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can take a closer look and guide you in ensuring she starts life in her new home as healthy as possible!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
