Unusual Pet: Bamboo Fan Shrimp not Eating / Moving 2 Days

I'm really worried about my bamboo fan shrimp, Shelly. I’ve had her for a little over six months now, and she’s always been super active, waving her little fans around and playing in the current. But for the past two days, she hasn’t been moving much, and I haven’t seen her eat a thing. She just sits there, barely catching any food particles. I tested the water, and all the parameters seem fine: ammonia, nitrate, nitrite are all at safe levels, and the temperature is consistent. Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m scared that I might be doing something wrong. Any advice on what I might be missing or how to coax her into eating again would be greatly appreciated. Shelly’s my first shrimp, and I just want to make sure she’s healthy and happy. Thanks so much!

Answer

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear your bamboo fan shrimp isn't doing well. These fascinating creatures can sometimes stop eating or moving due to various reasons. Let's explore some possibilities.

Firstly, water quality is crucial for their health. Check the aquarium's ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, as poor water quality can affect their behavior. Also, ensure the water temperature and pH are correct for bamboo shrimp, typically a pH around 6.5-7.5 and a temperature between 72-82°F.

Bamboo shrimp are filter feeders, meaning they catch food particles in the water with their fan-like appendages. If you've recently changed their diet or there isn't enough current in the tank—allowing food particles to remain suspended—they might not be getting enough to eat. Consider increasing the water flow slightly to see if this encourages feeding.

Stress is another factor. Recent tank changes, aggressive tank mates, or insufficient hiding spaces can all cause stress, making them less active.

Keep an eye out for signs of more serious issues: if your shrimp's color changes drastically, their exoskeleton looks damaged, or if other tank inhabitants are also showing signs of stress, these could indicate serious problems.

If your bamboo shrimp's condition doesn’t improve or you notice any of these concerning signs, please book a video consult with us. We’re here to help guide you through more tailored solutions.
