Turkeys with Mycoplasma g. Respiratory infections.

Help, I'm really worried and could use some advice. I've got a small flock of turkeys, and lately, they seem to have come down with something. It started a couple of days ago; they’ve been sneezing a lot and making strange wheezing noises. They're just not acting like themselves, and two of them have clear nose discharge. I clean their space regularly and make sure they have fresh water, so I’m baffled about what’s happening. Has anyone else dealt with anything like this? It's getting chilly here, so I'm anxious it might get worse. They’re more than just livestock to me; they're like family, and I just want to make sure they're okay. Any suggestions on what steps I should take?

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. Mycoplasma gallisepticum, commonly known as MG, is a respiratory disease that can affect turkeys and other poultry. It's similar to a common cold in humans but can become quite serious if not managed properly. Symptoms to look out for include coughing, nasal discharge, swollen sinuses, and bubbly eyes. MG can spread through close contact, so isolating infected birds is a good first step.

At home, make sure your turkeys have clean water and high-quality nutrition to help their immune systems. Maintaining proper ventilation in the coop is also crucial, as fresh air helps reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Cleaning the living area regularly will decrease the chance of re-infection.

Be vigilant for signs of a severe infection, such as a significant reduction in appetite, lethargy, or bluish facial skin. These could indicate the infection is affecting their oxygen levels.

If your turkeys aren't improving or if multiple birds are showing symptoms, it's wise to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can further diagnose and discuss more intensive treatments to help keep your feathered friends healthy.
