Treatment for Stomatosis(?) in dog

Help, what do I do? My sweet pup, Daisy, has been acting really strange lately, and I’m getting worried. We just noticed that she’s been drooling way more than usual, especially after she eats, and her breath has gotten, well, pretty terrible. It’s been a few days now, mostly in the evenings after dinner. She’s still eating and playing, but she seems a bit off, like she's uncomfortable or in pain. I'm wondering if anyone's dealt with something like this before? I read about stomatosis and am freaking out a bit, but I’m not sure if that’s what it is. The vet’s closed today, and I don’t want to overreact, but I also don’t want to ignore it if it’s serious. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. Stomatitis in dogs can definitely be worrisome, as it involves inflammation of the mouth's soft tissues. It might cause your dog to have bad breath, drool excessively, or even stop eating due to discomfort.

There are a few potential causes of stomatitis. It could be due to poor dental hygiene leading to plaque and tartar buildup, an infection, or even an underlying systemic condition like an immune system disorder. Sometimes, allergies or certain toxins can irritate your dog's mouth.

For at-home care, ensure your dog's teeth are regularly brushed with a dog-safe toothpaste to minimize tartar buildup. Soft foods might be easier for them to eat during this time, and make sure they have fresh, clean water available at all times. However, avoid trying to clean your dog's mouth if it's painful for them.

Keep an eye out for signs like excessive drooling, severe bad breath, reluctance to eat, or any visible sores in the mouth. These symptoms might indicate a more serious issue that warrants professional attention.

I’d recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet so a professional can take a closer look at your pet's symptoms and guide you on the next best steps to ensure their comfort and health.
