Question:

Trazadone for newfie after surgery: administer automatically every 12 hours or just use it as needed?

I'm really in need of some guidance here. My sweet Newfoundland just had surgery, and the vet prescribed trazodone to help with his recovery. I'm supposed to give it to him every 12 hours, but I'm confused about whether I should stick to this schedule like clockwork or just give it to him when he appears to need it. He's been through a lot, and I want to make sure he's comfortable without overmedicating him. He's such a gentle giant and normally stoic, so it’s hard to tell if he's in pain or just feeling lazy. Those of you who’ve been through something similar, what did you do? Did you strictly follow the schedule, or did you play it by ear? Appreciate any advice you can give!

Answer:

Hi there! I'm glad you reached out with your question about Trazodone for your Newfoundland. After surgery, it's important to manage your pup's comfort and stress levels effectively. Trazodone is commonly used in dogs to help with anxiety and can be especially useful during recovery when they might be feeling stressed or restless.

Whether you should give it every 12 hours or as needed depends on your vet's specific instructions and your dog's condition. Some dogs benefit from regular dosing to maintain a consistent calming effect, while others might only need it in situations that increase anxiety, like if they seem particularly restless or anxious.

At home, make sure your dog has a quiet, comfortable space to rest and avoid unnecessary stimuli that could increase anxiety. Gentle walks and calm interaction can also be soothing.

Watch for signs like excessive sedation, difficulty breathing, or agitation, as these might indicate a different issue or a reaction to the medication, which would need immediate veterinary attention.

It's always best to follow up with your vet for guidance tailored to your dog's specific needs. I'm here to help, too! Please consider booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet so we can dig a bit deeper into your dog's situation and offer more personalized advice. Wishing your furry friend a smooth and speedy recovery!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
