I'm feeling super overwhelmed and could really use some advice. I brought my sweet kitty, Oliver, to the vet yesterday because he needed a tooth extraction. The vet and I agreed this was the best option for his decaying tooth. However, when I picked him up, they told me they decided to grind down the tooth instead of extracting it. They didn’t call or explain the change in procedure, and now I’m worried. Is this normal? Oliver seems a bit uncomfortable and I’m questioning if this was the right decision. Has anyone else been through something similar with their pets? I’m just trying to figure out if I should push for more answers from the vet or if there’s something I’m just not understanding. Thanks in advance for any advice or insight you can offer!
Hello there! Thanks for reaching out. It sounds like your cat might have been scheduled for a tooth extraction, but during the procedure, the veterinarian decided to grind the tooth down instead. This can happen if the veterinarian assesses that grinding will alleviate any immediate discomfort or protect the structural integrity of the tooth without needing to remove it entirely. Sometimes, teeth can get in the way of some procedures — the grind down could have been necessary to prevent future problems, like soft tissue injuries.
For now, keep an eye on your cat. Watch for any signs of discomfort, such as pawing at the mouth, drooling, bad breath, or changes in eating or behavior. These can indicate she might still be in pain or that there’s an infection. Providing soft, easy-to-eat food can help make dining less uncomfortable while she heals.
Use a warm, damp cloth to gently clean around her mouth to prevent any infection if you notice drooling. And if you see any swelling, bleeding, or your cat appears to be in ongoing pain, it’s essential to seek further professional assistance.
I'd highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet team members. They can assess if your cat needs additional treatment or give you peace of mind about her recovery. Take care! 🌟
