I could really use some advice or perspective on this situation. We recently got a beautiful puppy from what seemed like a reputable breeder. However, within a few days of bringing him home, our little guy started showing signs of illness—lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. It was super scary, and of course, we rushed him to the vet hospital because we were really worried. Thankfully, he's on the mend now, but when we told the breeder what happened, they were surprisingly upset with us for taking him to the hospital without contacting them first. They insisted we should have brought the puppy back to them instead. I just don’t get it—shouldn't our first priority be getting our pup the help he needs as quickly as possible? I feel like we did the right thing, but now they’re making me doubt myself. Have any of you dealt with something like this before? How did you handle it? I just want the best for my furry friend.
Hello, and thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear about the situation with your puppy and the breeder. Taking your puppy to the vet was the right choice, and it's important to prioritize your puppy's health and well-being.
Puppies can be delicate and susceptible to various illnesses, including infections, parasites, and dietary issues. These problems can escalate quickly, so early intervention is crucial. The breeder's reaction might stem from concerns about liability or their preference for handling minor issues themselves, but professional veterinary care is always the safest route.
At home, ensure your puppy stays hydrated and maintains a consistent, nutritionally balanced diet. Keep an eye on your puppy for any signs that may require immediate attention, such as persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, refusal to eat, or difficulty breathing. If you observe any of these symptoms, it’s important to act quickly, as they can indicate serious health issues.
Remember, you did the right thing by seeking professional help. If you have further concerns or need guidance, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our experienced vets on Dial A Vet. They can provide personalized advice and help you ensure your puppy remains healthy and happy. Take care!
