Question:

Still trying to make sense of the death of our 14 W kitten

I'm really struggling and could use some support. We recently went through the heartbreak of losing our 14-week-old kitten, Luna. She was such a little bundle of joy and energy, always chasing her toys around and purring herself to sleep in our laps. It happened so suddenly, and I'm finding it hard to process. One minute she was playing, the next she seemed really tired, and before we knew it, she was gone. We've been back and forth to the vet trying to understand what went wrong, but nothing seems to give us clear answers. It’s just really tough, and I can't shake the feeling that I missed something important or did something wrong. Has anyone else been through something like this? How did you cope with the loss and the questions that never seem to get answered? Any advice or similar experiences would really help right now. Thanks for listening.

Answer:

I'm truly sorry for your loss; it's heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet, especially at such a young age. Kittens can be quite vulnerable, and their health can change rapidly. There are several potential causes for the sudden loss you’ve experienced.

Firstly, kittens are prone to infections like respiratory viruses or feline panleukopenia, often called "feline distemper." These can sometimes lead to severe complications before symptoms become obvious. Congenital defects, which are abnormalities present from birth, could also be a possibility. These might affect vital organs like the heart or lungs, interfering with normal development and function.

In terms of caring for other pets, ensure their environment is clean and free from hazards that can pose risks, such as small objects they might swallow, or potentially toxic substances like certain houseplants or foods. Proper nutrition and regular veterinary check-ups are also key.

Keep an eye out for symptoms in other pets that might require attention, such as lethargy, refusal to eat, difficulty breathing, or any changes in their behavior. These can be indicators of something serious that may need medical intervention.

If you're still concerned or have any other pets you're worried about, booking a video consult with a veterinarian through Dial A Vet might be a good next step to get personalized advice and reassurance.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
