I'm reaching out because I really need some advice or support right now. My sweet boy, Max, had a TPLO surgery a few months ago to help with his torn cruciate ligament. We were optimistic because everything seemed to be going well post-surgery. However, a few weeks ago, he started limping again, and he seemed to be in a lot of pain. After seeing the vet and doing some tests, they found out he has a staph infection that's now resistant and has spread into the bone. I'm absolutely devastated and terrified for him. The antibiotics don't seem to be working, and our vet is suggesting some pretty drastic treatments. Has anyone gone through something similar? What helped your pup pull through? Any thoughts, experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hello there,
I’m sorry to hear about the challenges your pet is facing after the TPLO surgery. Staph infections, particularly resistant ones, can be concerning, especially when they involve the bone. It’s not uncommon for surgical sites to be prone to infections because the area is healing and immune defenses might be compromised post-surgery.
A resistant staph infection means that typical antibiotics might not work effectively, so treatment can require more specialized antibiotics and longer courses. Infections in the bone (osteomyelitis) can be more complex, requiring careful management.
At home, ensure the surgical site is kept clean and dry. Minimize your pet’s activity to prevent added stress on the leg, and follow any wound care instructions your vet has provided carefully. Supporting your pet's immune system with a balanced diet and stress reduction can also be beneficial.
Watch for signs of worsening infection, such as increased redness, swelling, discharge, or if your pet seems to be in more pain, lethargic, or refuses to eat. These could indicate a deeper or spreading infection.
Since this situation can be quite serious, it’s important to keep in close contact with your veterinarian or consider booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet experts to discuss the best way forward. They can provide more tailored advice and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
Take care, and hope your furry friend feels better soon!
