Squeezing an IV bag into dog

I'm in a bit of a distressing situation with my dog, Max. He's been really sick, and the vet suggested giving him fluids at home using an IV bag. I've never done anything like this before, and I'm feeling super overwhelmed. Has anyone here had to do this for their pup? How do you even go about squeezing the IV bag properly without hurting him or making things worse? I'm terrified of doing something wrong and making him more uncomfortable than he already is. Any tips or tricks on how to make this process as smooth and easy as possible would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer – Max and I are both really grateful!

Hi there! It sounds like you’re trying to administer fluids to your dog using an IV bag. This can sometimes be necessary if your dog is dehydrated, recovering from an illness, or dealing with kidney issues. It’s great that you’re taking steps to care for your furry friend at home.

First, ensure that you've been properly advised by a veterinarian on how to administer subcutaneous fluids. Typically, this involves using a sterile needle to puncture the skin and injecting fluids just under the skin, usually around the scruff of the neck.

Make sure to handle the bag hygienically to avoid contamination, and use a clean needle each time. Warm the fluid bag to body temperature by letting it sit in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes before administering.

Be gentle and calm, reassuring your pet throughout the process. Discomfort can arise if the fluid is too cold or if there's too much pressure during administration.

Please watch for signs of any serious issues, such as swelling that does not subside, persistent lethargy, vomiting, or if your pet seems distressed or in pain during the process.

If you’re nervous or unsure about doing this at home, or if you notice any concerning symptoms, it’s important to consult a veterinarian promptly. I encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can guide you through the process safely and answer any questions you might have.
