I'm really in need of some advice and hoping you all might have some experience or insight. A few months ago, my vet recommended a special diet and probiotics for my 4-year-old golden retriever, Max. He'd been having some digestive issues, nothing too severe, but enough to cause us some concern. Since starting this regimen, Max seems to be doing a lot better—his energy is up, and he’s back to his playful self! The vet hasn’t given me a clear answer on whether this diet and probiotic combo is something he’ll need indefinitely or if it's just a temporary fix. I’m a bit worried about the long-term effects and the cost of keeping him on this plan forever, especially since a few friends have mentioned that dietary changes should just be temporary. Has anyone else been through this? I just want to make sure I’m doing the best for Max, and any stories or advice would be much appreciated!
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out with your question about special diets and probiotics for your pet! It's great that you're being proactive about their health.
Pets are sometimes placed on special diets or given probiotics for various reasons, including digestive issues, allergies, or chronic conditions like kidney disease. Whether these should be used temporarily or long-term often depends on the underlying issue and your pet's overall health.
For instance, if your pet was prescribed a special diet due to a temporary stomach upset or after surgery, they may only need it for a short period. Conversely, if your pet has a chronic condition like food allergies or kidney disease, they may require a special diet indefinitely to help manage those issues.
Probiotics can support gut health and might be helpful following an illness or antibiotics. They can sometimes be used long-term for pets with recurring digestive issues, but it's best to follow the guidance of your veterinarian.
At home, monitor your pet's weight, coat condition, and stool consistency—these can offer clues about how well the diet is working. If you notice vomiting, diarrhea, significant weight changes, or if your pet seems lethargic, it might be time for a re-evaluation.
I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss your pet’s specific needs in more detail, ensuring they’re receiving the best possible care.
Wishing your pet good health!
Warm regards,
