Spayed dog with vaginal discharge

I'm really hoping to get some advice from anyone who's experienced something similar with their pups. I have a female dog, Luna, who was spayed about a year ago. Out of nowhere, I've noticed she's been having some vaginal discharge the past couple days. It's sort of clear with a slight odor, and I'm really concerned. She's acting normal otherwise, eating and playing like she usually does, but I can't shake this uneasy feeling. I called the vet, but the earliest appointment isn't until next week. I'm worried sick and wondering if this could be something serious or if I'm just overreacting. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Any insight would really help ease my mind! Thanks so much in advance.

Answer

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns with your dog. Vaginal discharge in a spayed dog can be worrying, but let's explore some potential causes together.

Common reasons for vaginal discharge in a spayed dog include vaginitis, urinary tract infections, or even a condition called stump pyometra, which happens if any ovarian tissue remains post-surgery. Sometimes, discharge can also result from irritants or foreign objects.

For at-home care, make sure your dog stays clean and dry. Gently wipe the area with a damp cloth to help prevent irritation. Encouraging her to drink plenty of water can support her urinary health.

Look out for signs like a foul odor, blood in the discharge, lethargy, or any signs of pain, such as whimpering or a hunched back. Additionally, if your dog is frequently licking the area or showing changes in her urination habits, it could indicate a more serious issue.

If the discharge persists or you notice any concerning symptoms, it's important to get her checked out. I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. This way, we can provide a more detailed assessment and help you determine the next best steps for her care.
