Small 20lb dog ate 300mg of gabapentin

Help, I'm freaking out right now because my little furball, Max, got into something he really shouldn’t have. He's just a tiny 20-pound pup, and somehow he managed to snatch 300mg of gabapentin off the counter when I wasn't looking. He's usually a little troublemaker, but this is giving me major anxiety. I've heard of gabapentin being used for dogs, but in much smaller doses. I’m worried about what this could do to him, given his size. Right now, he seems a bit lethargic and maybe a little wobbly on his feet, but I’m not sure if that’s just me being paranoid. Has anyone gone through something similar? What should I be looking out for, and should I rush him to the emergency vet? Any advice would be so appreciated right now because I just want to make sure my little buddy is going to be okay.

Answer

Thanks for your question. Gabapentin, which is sometimes used to manage pain or seizures in pets, can potentially cause issues if a large amount is consumed at once. For a small dog weighing around 20 pounds, ingesting 300mg could lead to symptoms like drowsiness, lack of coordination, vomiting, or diarrhea.

At home, keep a close eye on your dog for any unusual behavior. Ensure they have a quiet and comfortable place to rest, and monitor their water intake, as dehydration can occur if vomiting or diarrhea is present. Avoid giving them any more food or medications until you've consulted a vet.

Watch for signs such as extreme lethargy, difficulty walking, tremors, or confusion. These could indicate a more serious reaction requiring immediate veterinary attention.

It's always reassuring to consult directly with a professional, so I recommend booking a video consult with a Dial A Vet veterinarian. They can provide guidance tailored to your dog's specific situation and help ensure your pet stays safe and healthy.
