Question:

Slightly itchy ears even after ear drops on cat

I’m really hoping for some advice here because I’m starting to worry about my fur baby, Whiskers. So, a little backstory—about a week ago, I noticed Whiskers scratching her ears a lot more than usual. I took her to the vet, and they gave me some ear drops, which I’ve been using religiously as instructed. But even after a full week of treatment, she still seems to be a bit itchy. It’s not as bad as it was, but she's definitely not 100% yet, and it breaks my heart to see her uncomfortable. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could it be the drops aren’t working, or am I possibly using them wrong? I’d appreciate any tips or insight before heading back to the vet for a follow-up. Thanks so much! 🐱❤️

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like your kitty is dealing with some persistent itchiness, which can be frustrating for both of you. Even after using ear drops, there are a few reasons why your cat might still be itchy.

First, it could be that the initial issue, such as ear mites or an infection, wasn't fully resolved. Additionally, if your cat is experiencing allergies, they may continue to feel itchy even after treatment. Sometimes, yeast or fungal infections or polyps in the ear can also cause continued discomfort.

For at-home care, you can gently clean your cat's ears using a vet-approved ear cleaning solution. Use a soft cloth or cotton ball, but avoid using cotton swabs inside the ear canal to prevent injury. Ensuring your cat's ears are dry after cleaning can help, as moisture can exacerbate itching.

Watch for signs of a more serious issue, such as redness, a bad odor, swelling, or if your cat seems to be in pain or is scratching aggressively. These symptoms could indicate an unresolved infection or other condition that needs more targeted treatment.

If the itchiness persists, it's best to book a video consult with one of our veterinarians on Dial A Vet. We can help figure out exactly what's going on and suggest the best course of action. Hope your furry friend feels better soon!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
