I really need some advice and maybe a little bit of reassurance from fellow pet parents. I recently got my dog, Max, the Lyme vaccine because we live in an area with a lot of ticks and it's a constant battle to keep them off him. A day after his shot, I’ve noticed he's been acting really out of it. He’s usually super energetic and playful, but now it’s like he’s lost all his energy and is just laying around. He’s also been refusing his favorite treats, which is so unlike him. He’s up to date with all his other vaccines and has never had a reaction before, so I'm freaking out a bit. Have any of you experienced side effects like this after the Lyme vaccine? How long did it take for your dogs to bounce back? Any tips on what I can do to help him feel better in the meantime? Thanks so much!
Hello! It's great that you’re keeping up with your dog’s vaccines. The Lyme vaccine is generally safe, but like any vaccine, there can be some side effects. Most dogs tolerate it well, but you might notice some mild reactions.
Common side effects can include tenderness and slight swelling at the injection site, which usually resolves in a day or two. Some dogs might feel a bit tired or have a mild fever for about 24 hours. These minor symptoms can be managed by keeping your furry friend comfortable and providing plenty of water and rest.
Occasionally, a dog could have an allergic reaction, which might cause itching, swelling around the face, or hives. In rare cases, you might see vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can be signs of a more serious reaction and would require immediate veterinary care.
If your dog seems uncomfortable or the side effects persist beyond a couple of days, it’s wise to check in with a professional. Keep a close eye on them and trust your instincts if something seems off.
