I really need advice and some emotional support right now. This is a tough post to write, but here goes. We've had our two cats, Whiskers and Luna, for five years now, and I adore them so much. However, ever since we moved to our new place, they’ve been peeing outside of their litter boxes, and no matter what we try, nothing seems to help. We’ve taken them to the vet to rule out any medical issues, changed their litter multiple times, and even added extra boxes. Despite all this, the problem persists. My home constantly smells like cat pee, and I'm just at the end of my rope. It's becoming overwhelming and I feel like it might be affecting my mental health. I love them, but I’m seriously considering whether we need to rehome them if things don't change. Has anyone been through something similar? How did you handle it? I'm really torn about what to do and could use some guidance or suggestions.
Hi there,
I’m really sorry to hear that you've been dealing with this. It can be quite frustrating, but let's explore some possibilities before making any big decisions.
Cats peeing outside the litter box can be due to various reasons. Common causes include urinary tract infections, kidney issues, or stress-related behavioral problems. Cats are also sensitive to changes in their environment, such as a new pet, furniture, or even a change in litter box location or type.
First, let's rule out any medical issues by observing your cats for signs of distress while urinating, or if they're urinating more frequently. Increased thirst or blood in the urine are also warning signs that require immediate attention from a vet.
For at-home care, try adding more litter boxes with different types of litter to see if that helps. Consider using enzymatic cleaners to remove any lingering urine odor they may be associating with that spot. More importantly, ensure the boxes are cleaned daily.
Look for any signs of stress, like changes in behavior or eating habits, which might require a more enriched environment or attention to other animals in the home.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
