I'm really torn right now and could use some advice from fellow pet parents. My sweet boy, Charlie, just had a dental procedure today to remove a couple of bad teeth. The vet assured me it was routine, but now that he's home, he's just lying there looking so uncomfortable and out of it from the anesthesia. I can see he's in pain every time he tries to move or when he accidentally bumps something with his mouth. I literally have tears in my eyes seeing him like this. I called in sick for work today to be with him, but I'm not sure if I should take another day off tomorrow. For those who've gone through this, did you stay home with your fur babies after their dental work? I just don't want to risk leaving him alone if he needs me for comfort or in case something goes wrong. Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hello! It's great that you're thinking about your dog's well-being after their dental procedure. Generally, after a dental, your pup might be a bit groggy and possibly uncomfortable from the anesthesia and dental work. It's usually a good idea to have someone home with them for the first 24 hours to monitor their recovery.
Post-dental, you might notice some drooling or slight bleeding from the gums. This is typically normal. However, signs such as significant bleeding, swelling, difficulty breathing, or refusal to drink water can indicate a more serious problem and would require a visit to the vet.
At home, ensure your dog has a comfortable, quiet place to rest. Soft food may be recommended for a few days to ease any discomfort. Keep a close eye on their energy levels, appetite, and bathroom habits, as these can be indicators of how they're recovering.
Remember to follow any specific post-operative care instructions your vet provided. If you're unsure about anything or notice any concerning signs, it's always best to err on the side of caution and seek professional advice.
