I really need some advice about my French Bulldog, Max. He’s eight years old, and he's always been my little buddy, but I recently found out he's cryptorchid, which means one of his testicles didn’t descend. I’m kind of freaking out because I’ve read that this can lead to health issues like cancer. My vet mentioned neutering him might be a good idea, but I’m super anxious about putting him through surgery at his age. He’s in good health otherwise, but I’ve read mixed things online about how risky surgery can be for older dogs, and I'm really scared of anything going wrong. I don't want to make the wrong decision for my little guy. Has anyone else been through this? Any stories or advice would be so appreciated. Thanks!
Hello there! Thanks for reaching out with your question about your French Bulldog. First off, cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both of a male dog's testicles haven’t descended into the scrotum. This can sometimes lead to issues, so it's good you're considering your options.
Neutering an 8-year-old dog with cryptorchidism can be beneficial because retained testicles can increase the risk of testicular cancer and other complications like torsion. Removing the undescended testicle can help mitigate these risks and also prevent hormone-related behavioral issues.
That said, there are considerations since he's older. Anesthesia can carry some risks, especially in senior dogs or breeds with particular respiratory concerns like French Bulldogs. It’s crucial to have a vet assess his overall health with a thorough examination and possibly some pre-surgery blood work.
While you consider this decision, watch for signs such as swelling, unusual lumps, or any behavioral changes like increased aggression, which could indicate a complication.
I’d recommend setting up a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can provide a more personalized assessment to help you decide on the best course of action for your furry friend. Looking forward to helping you keep him happy and healthy!
