Question:

Should I find a new vet?

I'm really torn right now and need some advice. I have this amazing, goofy golden retriever named Charlie. He's my best friend, and I just want to make sure he gets the best care possible. Lately, though, I've been having doubts about our current vet. Charlie's been dealing with this recurring ear infection for a few months now, and it seems like every time we visit, they just put him on another round of the same antibiotics. I know they mean well, but I'm starting to feel like we're stuck in a loop that's not really helping him. Plus, the last few appointments have been so rushed, like I'm being herded in and out without a real chance to ask questions. I'm wondering if it's time to look for a new vet who might offer a fresh perspective or a more holistic approach? I don’t want to make a hasty decision, but Charlie’s health is my top priority. Any of you been through something similar? How do you know it’s time to search for a new vet? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Answer:

Hi there! I’m so glad you reached out with your concern. Deciding whether to find a new vet can be a tough decision, and it’s great that you’re considering what’s best for your beloved pet.

Here are a few things to think about: Do you feel listened to and supported by your current vet? It's important to have a trusting relationship where your questions and concerns are addressed fully. Also, if your pet has ongoing health issues, it might be beneficial to seek a second opinion. A fresh perspective can sometimes uncover underlying issues or offer new treatment options.

Meanwhile, at home, keep monitoring your pet for any changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels. Ensure they have a comfortable and stress-free environment with plenty of water and a balanced diet. And, of course, regular playtime and affection go a long way in keeping them happy!

Watch for signs of serious issues like persistent vomiting, diarrhea, sudden weight loss, or difficulty breathing, as these can require immediate attention.

If you're feeling unsure, I’d encourage you to schedule a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. It could be the perfect opportunity to discuss your concerns and help you decide the best course of action for you and your furry friend.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
