Should a dog on steroids (e.g prednisolone) have the Parvovirus vaccine?

I'm really stressed and could really use some advice. My six-year-old golden retriever, Max, has been on prednisolone for a few weeks now due to some ongoing health issues. He's doing much better, but the vet recommended that it's time for his Parvovirus booster. I'm worried because I've read conflicting information about giving vaccines to dogs on steroids, and I just want to make sure I'm doing what's best for Max. I can't bear the thought of anything happening to him because of a decision I made. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you handle it, and what did your vet suggest? I'd love to hear any experiences or advice you've got. Thanks so much for your help!

Answer

Hello! Thanks for reaching out with your question. Navigating the right course of action for your dog's health can certainly bring up a lot of questions and concerns.

When it comes to steroids, such as prednisolone, they can suppress the immune system, potentially affecting how well a vaccine, like the Parvovirus vaccine, works. The Parvovirus vaccine is crucial for protecting your dog from this highly contagious and serious virus. However, if your dog is currently on steroids, the vaccine may not be as effective because their immune system might not mount a strong response.

It’s important to consider the reason your dog is on steroids. If the steroids are for a short-term use or can be tapered down without risking your dog's health, your vet might suggest waiting until the course is finished. If your dog is on long-term steroids, a careful plan should be discussed with your vet to determine the best approach to keep your pet safe.

Watch for any signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite, and contact a vet if these occur.

I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of us at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your dog's specific situation in greater detail and advise the best course of action. Take care!
