Question:

Senior dog's dreams becoming more intense more often

Help, I’m really worried about my senior dog and could use some advice. Lately, my 12-year-old retriever, Max, has been experiencing what seem to be really intense dreams, and I’m not sure what’s causing it. It used to happen occasionally, but now it’s almost every night. He twitches, whimpers, and sometimes even barks a bit while he's sleeping. It’s gotten more frequent and more intense over the past few weeks, to the point where it sometimes wakes him up. During the day, he seems a bit groggy and doesn’t have his usual energy. I haven't changed his diet or routine recently, and I'm wondering if this is just a normal aging process or if there's something more I should be worried about. I’d love to hear if anyone else has experienced this with their older dogs and what steps you took. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Thanks for the question about your senior dog's intense dreaming! It’s quite common for pet owners to notice changes in their dogs’ sleep patterns as they age. Dreaming, much like in humans, typically occurs during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep and can involve twitching, vocalizations, or even running motions.

For senior dogs, intense dreaming might just be a normal part of aging. However, it could also indicate discomfort or underlying health issues. Causes might include arthritis or cognitive dysfunction syndrome, which can affect sleep quality. Pain, increased anxiety, or changes in sensory perception are also possibilities.

At home, ensure your pup has a comfortable and supportive bed to ease any joint discomfort. Maintaining a calm environment with a consistent routine can help ease nighttime anxiety. Some owners find that a gentle massage or a nightlight nearby can soothe their pet.

Watch for signs that might suggest a more serious issue, like excessive panting during sleep, unusually long periods of activity or distress, or changes in behavior during waking hours. If these symptoms appear, it’s worth investigating further.

To explore these concerns in more detail and get tailored advice, I recommend booking a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet. We’re here to help ensure your furry friend’s golden years are as comfortable and happy as possible!

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
