Question:

Senior dog with pyometra sent home with antibiotics

I'm really stressed out right now and could use some advice. I have an 11-year-old Labrador named Bella, and she's my world. We just got back from the vet, and I'm feeling pretty shaken. The vet diagnosed her with pyometra, which I understand is an infection of the uterus. Because of her age and some other health issues, they decided to send her home with antibiotics instead of opting for the surgery right away. I'm super anxious about this since I've read surgery is usually the best option, but maybe they know what's best given her age? Bella seems okay for now, eating and drinking a bit, but I'm just worried that we're not doing enough. Has anyone else been through this with an older dog? I could really use some reassurance or advice on what to watch for and how to keep her comfortable. Thanks in advance, I'm totally worried!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm so sorry to hear that your senior dog is going through this. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that can happen in unspayed females. When treated early with antibiotics, there's a chance of improvement, but sometimes surgery is necessary for a full recovery.

At home, make sure your dog is comfortable and has a quiet place to rest. It's important she stays hydrated, so encourage her to drink water. Since she's on antibiotics, keep an eye on how she's responding to them—some dogs can have tummy troubles like vomiting or diarrhea. If this happens, let your vet know right away.

Watch for signs that might indicate her condition is worsening or that she may need urgent care, such as a lack of appetite, excessive drinking, increased urination, lethargy, or if she is experiencing vomiting or abdominal pain. Any discharge from her vulva, or if she seems to be in pain, should also prompt a call to your vet.

Remember, while at-home care is supportive, pyometra can be life-threatening, and surgical intervention is often the definitive treatment. If you notice any concerning signs or if you're unsure about her progress, please book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We’re here to help guide you through this challenging time.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
