I completely understand why you're worried about your senior dog's health. It can be tough to decide the best course of action. Let's break down some possibilities to help you make an informed decision.
First, consider whether your dog is experiencing pain or a significant drop in quality of life. Common signs include difficulty moving, loss of appetite, or changes in behavior. Often, senior dogs face issues like arthritis, organ dysfunction, or even tumors. Surgery might help if there's a specific condition that could improve your dog's quality of life, but it's important to weigh the risks and benefits, especially since surgery can be hard on older dogs.
At home, focus on making your dog comfortable. Provide a soft, supportive bed, assist with mobility by using ramps, and ensure a quiet, stress-free environment. Keep an eye out for signs of severe discomfort such as labored breathing, persistent vomiting, or an inability to move.
If your dog seems content and happy, sometimes "doing nothing" can be a valid choice, allowing them to age gracefully. However, it's crucial to monitor for any decline in their well-being. Consider booking a video consult with a Dial A Vet to discuss your dog's specific situation in greater detail. They can offer personalized advice and help you decide on the best course for your furry friend’s golden years.
Senior dog health.. surgery or euthanasia or do nothing
I need some advice and I’m really torn. My sweet old girl, Lucy, who’s been with me for 14 years, has developed a tumor on her belly. I first noticed it about a month ago, and it's starting to get bigger and seems to bother her sometimes. I took her to the vet, and they said we could try surgery, but given her age, it’s risky. The other options would be to just let her live out her days as comfortably as possible or… consider putting her to sleep to avoid any pain. I can’t even believe I’m typing this. She still eats fine and wags her tail when I come home from work, but I don’t want her to suffer just because I can’t let go. Has anyone else been through this? I don’t know what’s best for her, and I don’t want to make the wrong decision.
