Question:

Scabs on dogs belly. Does this need to be seen by a vet?

I'm really worried about my little fur baby and could use some advice. Over the past few days, I've noticed some scabs forming on her belly. At first, I thought maybe she was just scratching herself or had a little playtime mishap, but now there are more of them, and they don’t seem to be going away. I haven’t changed her diet recently, and I'm pretty sure it’s not fleas since she’s been on her medication. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, but she does lick the area quite a bit, which has me concerned. I’m debating if I should take her to the vet because I don’t want to overreact, but at the same time, I don’t want to miss something that could be serious. Has anyone else experienced this with their dog? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Answer:

Hello there! It's definitely concerning when you notice scabs on your dog's belly, and I'm glad you've reached out. Let's explore a few possibilities that could be causing this.

Scabs can result from several things, including allergic reactions, insect bites, or even an underlying skin infection. It's also possible that your dog has been scratching or licking the area excessively due to itchiness, leading to scab formation.

At home, try gently cleaning the area with warm water and a mild, pet-safe cleanser. Make sure to keep an eye on your dog to prevent further licking or scratching, which can exacerbate the problem. You can use an Elizabethan collar if needed to keep those paws at bay.

However, if you notice any signs of infection like redness, swelling, pus, or if your dog seems to be in pain or discomfort, it's essential to have them evaluated by a vet. Additionally, any unusual changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels can indicate a more serious issue.

To ensure your furry friend gets the best care possible, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet. They can provide tailored advice and help determine if an in-person visit is necessary. Stay paw-sitive—we're here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
