Hello there! I'm glad you've reached out with your concerns about your pet. It sounds like you're dealing with quite a complex situation, so let's unpack it together.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) can indeed relapse, especially in breeds predisposed to spinal issues, or if there has been recent physical stress or trauma. Symptoms might include pain, difficulty walking, or changes in bladder control. Steroid Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis (SRMA), on the other hand, is a different condition. It's an inflammatory disease typically seen in younger dogs, characterized by neck pain, fever, and lethargy.
It's understandably worrying to see your pet in discomfort. While IVDD and SRMA can share symptoms, the treatments differ significantly, hence the importance of a clear diagnosis.
At home, ensure your pet has a comfortable, supportive resting place. Limiting movement, providing gentle massages, and using a warm compress can help relieve discomfort. However, avoid any strenuous activity and watch for signs of worsening pain or neurological symptoms, like paralysis, as these can be serious.
If your pet seems to be in significant pain or if symptoms persist or worsen, it's crucial to seek veterinary care promptly. I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals to discuss your pet's symptoms in detail and develop a plan tailored to their needs. Stay calm and give your furry friend lots of gentle love in the meantime.
Relapse of IVDD Symptoms, probability of SRMA?
I'm really struggling and hoping someone here has some insight. My sweet dog, Charlie, has been dealing with IVDD for a while. He's a small breed, so I know it can be common, but we've been super diligent with his care. After a previous episode, he seemed to be doing okay, but suddenly there's a relapse in his symptoms. He's trembling, having trouble walking, and just not himself. It's heartbreaking to see him in pain. I took him to the vet, and they mentioned the possibility of SRMA? I’m not very familiar with it. Has anyone else experienced this with their pup? I’m desperate for any advice, experiences, or even just some reassurance. What signs should I be looking for or questions should I ask the vet? I'm just incredibly worried and want to make sure I’m doing everything I can for him. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.
