Recently my cat has been pulling out her hair in her back...

Help, what do I do? My cat, Luna, has started this strange habit of pulling out her hair on her back, and it just seems to be getting worse. Over the past week, every morning I’m finding more tufts of her hair scattered around the living room, and there are these little bald spots forming. She never did this before, and I’m really worried it might be something I’m missing. It’s just so heartbreaking to see her do this. She’s acting normal otherwise—eating, playing, all the usual stuff. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm really anxious and could use some advice on what might be going on or what I should do next. Thanks so much.

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. When a cat starts pulling out her hair, it can definitely be concerning and leave you feeling a bit puzzled. There are several reasons this could be happening. One common cause is allergies, which can be triggered by food, fleas, or environmental factors. Cats can also begin overgrooming due to stress or anxiety, much like a person might bite their nails. Sometimes, it can be due to underlying skin conditions or even pain in the area they're grooming.

At home, you can ensure your cat is up to date on flea prevention, as these pesky parasites are often culprits. Look around for any changes in her environment that might be causing stress. Providing a quiet, calm space can sometimes help settle anxious behaviors. Ensuring she's on a balanced diet that supports skin health can also be beneficial.

Keep an eye on her skin for redness, open sores, or signs of infection, like swelling or bad odors. If she starts acting lethargic, stops eating, or if her behavior changes, these could indicate a more serious issue.
