Ran out of my prescription cat food, unsure what to feed for the next 24 hours until the package arrives

I'm in a bit of a panic here and could really use some advice. I've completely run out of my cat's prescription food, and her new package won't arrive until tomorrow around this time. Luna has a pretty strict diet due to her urinary tract issues, and I'm honestly not sure what to do until her special food gets here. She's already giving me those big, questioning eyes, and it's breaking my heart. I’ve got some regular dry food and a bit of chicken in the fridge, but I'm worried either might upset her system or not be good for her condition. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or have any suggestions on what’s safe to feed her in the meantime? I just want her to be comfortable and okay. Thanks so much in advance for any help or reassurance you can offer!

Answer

Hi there! Running out of prescription cat food can be stressful, but don't worry—I'm here to help figure something out for your kitty in the meantime.

For just a day, you could serve a temporary diet of plain, boiled chicken or turkey, ensuring it's boneless and skinless, but avoid any seasonings or oils. This plain protein can be easier on your cat's stomach and is a safe alternative until you have the special food back in stock. If your cat is used to dry food, you can also try mixing boiled chicken with a small amount of plain white rice.

While this temporary diet can work for most cats, keep an eye out for any signs that might suggest distress, such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or any change in behavior. These could indicate an adverse reaction or, more urgently, the need for a prescribed diet for managing a specific medical condition, and in such cases, it's best to consult with a veterinarian quickly.

If you have any concerns or questions, or if your cat appears unwell during this temporary period, don't hesitate to book a video consult with one of our licensed vets on Dial A Vet. We're here to support you and your furry friend!
