I don’t know what’s going on with Max right now and I could really use some advice! We started him on prednisone a couple of days ago because he’s been having this really stubborn allergic reaction and it’s just not getting any better. Now, he’s acting super restless, panting more than usual, and I even heard him whining a little during the night which isn’t like him at all. I’m sort of freaking out because I thought the meds were supposed to help, not make him irritable and uncomfortable. Has anyone else experienced this with their dog? Is it normal or should I be worried? The vet said to give it some time, but I just can’t shake this uneasy feeling seeing Max like this. Any advice or reassurance would be great!
Thanks for reaching out about your dog's reaction to prednisone. It's important to be attentive when you notice any unusual behavior or symptoms after giving your dog medication. Prednisone is a corticosteroid often used to treat allergies, but it can occasionally cause side effects or allergic reactions.
Some dogs may experience increased thirst, hunger, or more frequent urination, which are common side effects. However, if you notice hives, facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing after giving prednisone, these might be signs of an allergic reaction.
For at-home care, ensure your dog has access to plenty of water, especially if showing signs like increased thirst. However, if serious symptoms like swelling or breathing difficulties occur, it’s crucial to seek veterinary care immediately, as these require prompt attention.
Monitor your pet closely for any changes or worsening symptoms. If your dog's condition doesn't improve or if you observe any severe signs I mentioned earlier, it’s best to consult a veterinarian.
