Question:

Question about my dog's upcoming knee surgery, please

I'm feeling pretty anxious right now and could really use some advice about my dog, Max. He's scheduled for knee surgery next week and I'm worried sick about the whole thing. Max is my lovable seven-year-old golden retriever, and he's been having a lot of trouble with his back leg lately. The vet says it's a common issue, and surgery is the best option to get him back on his paws. I'm just terrified about the actual procedure and the recovery process. Has anyone here been through something similar with their pet? What was your experience like, especially with the post-surgery care? I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help Max recover smoothly, so any tips, stories, or even just a bit of reassurance would really mean a lot to me right now. Thanks so much in advance.

Answer:

Hi there! It’s completely natural to have questions about your dog’s upcoming knee surgery, and I’m here to help. Knees can be tricky, and surgery is often needed for issues like a torn ligament or knee cap problems. Whatever the case, it’s great you’re being proactive.

Before the surgery, make sure your furry friend is comfortable and has a quiet space to relax. Keeping them calm helps reduce stress. Day of, remember not to feed them unless your vet says otherwise—they’ll need an empty stomach for the anesthetic.

Post-surgery, your dog might seem groggy. That’s normal! Ensure they have a comfy place to rest, away from other pets or excitement. Watch for signs of pain, like excessive panting, whining, or reluctance to move. If the stitches or bandages look irritated or your dog has a fever, contact your vet.

Encourage slow, controlled movements as your dog heals, and follow your vet’s rehab plan. Gentle, short walks might be recommended, but make sure they don’t overdo it.

Keep an eye on their appetite and water intake, and use any prescribed pain relief as directed. If concerns arise, like swelling, not bearing weight after several days, or signs of infection, reach out to a vet right away.

If you still have questions or need reassurance, consider setting up a video consult with one of our experts for peace of mind. They’re just a click away and always happy to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
