Question:

Question about cats and laundry!

Help, I’m at my wit’s end with this cat and laundry problem! So, I have this adorable tabby, Max, who's been with us for over a year now, and he's generally been a sweetheart. But lately, he's developed this bizarre habit of peeing on the laundry basket—clean clothes, dirty clothes, it doesn’t matter. It’s gotten to the point where I’m double-checking where I step every time I walk past the laundry area. I’ve tried moving the laundry basket to different spots in the house, but somehow he finds it every time, no matter where I hide it. We’ve kept his litter box clean and even introduced another one, but he still does this. My partner thinks it might be a territorial thing or maybe stress-related, but I'm clueless and exhausted from the constant washing and rewashing. Has anyone else experienced this, and what did you do to stop it? Would love any advice or suggestions before I drown in laundry!

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out with your question—cats and laundry can be quite the combination! If your cat is suddenly drawn to your laundry, they might be seeking comfort from your scent, or they might enjoy the warmth and softness of freshly washed clothes. However, there are a few things to consider.

Sometimes, chewing or eating fabric can be a sign of dietary deficiencies, stress, or a condition called pica, where a cat eats non-food items. If this behavior is new or excessive, it’s important to take note of any changes in your cat’s diet or environment that might be causing stress.

For at-home care, ensure your laundry is kept out of reach and provide your cat with soft bedding or blankets as an alternative. Interactive toys or treat puzzles can also help keep them mentally stimulated.

Keep an eye out for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or a change in behavior. These could indicate your kitty has ingested something they shouldn’t have, or that there’s an underlying issue that needs attention.

If your cat’s behavior continues or you notice any concerning symptoms, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can help determine the root of the issue and provide guidance tailored to your furry friend.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
