I really need some advice! My sweet cat, Luna, just had a C-section a few days ago to deliver her four adorable kittens. Everything seemed to go okay with the surgery, and she's been an amazing mom despite the rough start. But I'm getting worried because ever since the procedure, she hasn't been eating much at all. Before the surgery, she was always the first one at her food bowl. Now, she's barely picking at her meals. I've tried offering her all her favorites, even some special wet food, but she just sniffs and walks away. I'm concerned she won't have the energy to take care of her little ones. Has anyone else been through this? Any advice on how I can encourage Luna to eat would be really appreciated! I just want to make sure my girl is back to her happy, healthy self soon. Thanks so much in advance!
Hello there, I'm sorry to hear that your queen is eating very little following her C-section. It’s quite common for new moms, human or feline, to experience a decreased appetite after surgery. This could be due to several things, like pain, stress from the procedure, or even the anesthetic effects.
First, ensure she has a warm, quiet space away from noise where she can rest and nurse her kittens without disturbance. A low-stress environment can really help. Make sure she's drinking water, as dehydration is a concern postpartum. Encourage her to eat by offering her favorite wet food, which is also easier to digest and more tempting right now. Small, frequent meals may be more appealing to her.
However, keep a close eye on her. If you notice she's not eating for more than 24 hours, shows signs of pain (like vocalizing or hiding), has a fever, or any discharge from the surgical incision, it could indicate complications like an infection. These would warrant immediate veterinary attention.
Since this is an important time for her recovery, and to ensure the health of her kittens too, consider booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet. They can provide tailored advice specific to her condition and keep her on the path to a healthy recovery.
