I’m really struggling and just need some advice or support. Tomorrow I’m supposed to say goodbye to my sweet old dog, Max, and I'm agonizing over whether I'm making the right decision. He’s been with me for 14 years, and lately his health has really taken a turn. He can barely walk anymore, and he's not interested in his favorite treats. The hardest part is seeing his eyes—once so vibrant, now look cloudy and tired. I feel guilty and keep asking myself if I'm acting too soon or if I'm letting my emotions get the best of me. My heart is just breaking, and I want to make sure I’m doing what’s best for him. I don’t want him to suffer, but I also don’t want to jump the gun. Has anyone else been through this? How did you know it was time?
Hi there,
I'm really sorry to hear you're facing such a difficult decision. It's never easy to think about saying goodbye to a beloved pet. The decision to euthanize a pet is deeply personal and often depends on factors like their quality of life and any medical conditions they might have.
Consider your dog's current state—are they experiencing pain that can't be managed with medication? Are they able to enjoy their favorite activities, or is their day-to-day life more about discomfort and distress? Sometimes, pets will stop eating or become less interested in interacting with their family, which can be indicators that their quality of life is diminishing.
At home, you can provide comfort by keeping your dog calm and surrounded by familiar objects and smells. A quiet space and plenty of your love and presence can help soothe them during this time.
Watch for signs of significant distress, like persistent crying, inability to stand, or labored breathing, as these suggest there may be a need for immediate intervention.
This is a hard path to walk alone, and speaking with a veterinarian can provide clarity and assurance. I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We're here to support you and help guide you through this emotional process with compassion and expertise. You're not alone.
Take care.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
