I’m really at a loss and could use some advice. My sweet Pug, Bella, has been struggling with recurrent UTIs for the past few months, and I’m starting to panic. We’ve been to the vet multiple times, and while the antibiotics help for a bit, the infections keep coming back. To make matters worse, she’s recently started showing signs of Pug Myelopathy. She’s been wobbly on her hind legs, and there are days when it’s just heartbreaking to watch her struggle to get around. I've read that this condition can be managed but coupled with her constant UTIs, I just feel so helpless. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? I’m desperate for tips or treatments that might make life a bit easier for Bella. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share.
Thanks for reaching out with your concerns about your pug. Pugs are wonderful companions, but they can be prone to certain health issues, such as recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and conditions like pug myelopathy.
Recurrent UTIs in pugs can be due to several factors, including anatomical features that make bacteria more likely to enter the urinary tract, underlying health issues like bladder stones, or even complications from pug myelopathy affecting bladder control. Maintaining good hydration and allowing frequent bathroom breaks can help prevent bacterial buildup. Ensuring your pug maintains a healthy weight and diet is also beneficial.
For pug myelopathy, a condition that can affect the spinal cord and subsequently the hind limbs and bladder, providing a comfortable place to rest, cautious handling, and gentle exercise to maintain muscle tone can support your pug at home. Keep an eye on your pug's mobility and ability to control urination, as worsening symptoms might need more immediate attention.
Look out for signs such as blood in the urine, frequent or painful urination, incontinence, changes in mobility, or signs of pain, as these could indicate a more serious issue requiring veterinary intervention.
