Question:

Possibly double dosed cat with amitriptyline

I’m hoping someone can help me out here because I’m seriously freaking out. My cat, Muffin, has been on amitriptyline for anxiety, and I might have accidentally given her a double dose today. I usually dose her in the morning, but today has been so hectic I can’t remember if I already gave it to her when I got up. Now I’m sitting here, watching her like a hawk, terrified that I’ve hurt her. She seems a bit more lethargic than usual and not really interested in her favorite toy, which isn’t like her at all. I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or if I should rush her to the vet. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What should I look out for to make sure she’s okay? Any advice at all would be appreciated—thanks a ton, guys!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you’re dealing with a bit of a stressful situation, so let’s sort it out together. Amitriptyline is a medication sometimes used in cats for issues like anxiety or certain types of pain. If your kitty got an extra dose, there are a few things we should watch for, just to be on the safe side.

Typical signs of an overdose might include sedation, confusion, difficulty standing, vomiting, or a rapid heart rate. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek veterinary help immediately, as they could indicate your cat needs supportive care.

For now, keep an eye on your furry friend in a calm, quiet area to reduce stress. Ensure fresh water is available, as hydration is often helpful. Observing your cat closely over the next 24 hours is key. If they seem overly lethargic or any new symptoms develop, reaching out to a vet for more specific advice would be wise.

While keeping a watchful eye at home, it's a good idea to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. This will ensure tailored guidance for your pet's situation, helping you to feel more at ease. We’re here to help, every step of the way!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
