Help, I'm feeling so lost and worried. My sweet golden retriever, Max, started showing signs of a urinary tract infection about two weeks ago. I took him to the vet right away, and they put him on a course of antibiotics. He seemed to get better during the treatment, but right after we finished the meds, his symptoms returned. I brought Max back to the vet, and they did a urine culture, but it came back negative. I'm really confused because he still seems uncomfortable, and I'm worried we missed something. Is it possible that the antibiotics affected the culture results, or might there be another issue at play? I want to do what's best for Max, but I'm not sure what steps to take next. Any advice or similar experiences would be incredibly appreciated!
Thank you for reaching out with your question! It’s understandable to be concerned about your pet’s health and the accuracy of diagnostic tests. A false-negative urine culture can sometimes occur if your pet has recently been on antibiotics. Antibiotics can reduce or eliminate the bacteria in the urinary tract temporarily, which might prevent them from growing in the culture, leading to a negative result even if an infection is present.
If your pet is showing signs like frequent urination, straining, blood in the urine, or discomfort while urinating, an infection could still be possible. Keeping a close eye on these symptoms is important. While waiting for further consultation, ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water, as hydration can help flush out any lingering bacteria.
Monitor your pet for any changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels. A worsening of symptoms, fever, or lethargy could be a sign of a more serious issue that might need urgent care.
If the symptoms persist or worsen, it’s a good idea to have a timely follow-up with a vet.
