Help, I'm really worried about my senior cat. He's been prescribed Synulox for an infection, and ever since starting the medication, his appetite has just vanished. He's always been a good eater, even in his older years, but now he just sniffs his food and walks away. I've tried tempting him with his favorite treats and switching up his food, but nothing seems to interest him. It breaks my heart to see him like this. He's around 15 years old and has always been a bit more fragile health-wise, which makes this even more concerning. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their cat while on Synulox? Should I stop giving it to him and call the vet? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm truly at a loss here.
Thanks for reaching out about your senior cat. It’s always concerning when our furry friends start losing interest in food, and I’m here to help you navigate this.
Synulox is an antibiotic often prescribed for infections. Sometimes, medications can affect a cat’s appetite. However, a decreased interest in food, especially in older cats, could also be related to other underlying health issues like dental problems, kidney disease, or gastrointestinal issues.
At home, you can try warming their food slightly to enhance its aroma, which might entice them to eat. Offering a variety of soft, easily digestible foods can also be beneficial, as older cats often find them more palatable. Keeping stress levels low and maintaining a calm environment is important too, as environmental changes can impact appetite.
Watch for signs like continuous vomiting, diarrhea, significant weight loss, or lethargy, as these may indicate a more serious issue that requires immediate attention. A reduction in urination or water intake can also be a red flag, especially if kidney concerns are suspected.
If your cat doesn't start eating soon, consider scheduling a video consultation with one of our Dial A Vet experts who can offer further guidance and determine if an in-person visit might be necessary. Your cat’s health is our priority, and we’re here to support both of you.
