Question:

Our dog had puppies and one of them looks very different from the rest.

I’m really hoping for some insights here because I’m feeling a bit lost and concerned. Our beloved dog just had a litter of adorable puppies, and while most of them share similar features, there’s one little pup who looks noticeably different from the rest. It’s got a much lighter coat, almost like a golden hue, whereas its siblings are closer to mom’s dark fur. Plus, it seems a bit smaller and less active, though it’s feeding well and doesn’t seem sick. I’m worried something might be wrong or if this is just normal variance. Do any of you have experience with this kind of situation? Could it be a health issue, or is it just nature’s way of making each pup unique? Any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! It's not uncommon for puppies from the same litter to look different from one another. Variations in color, size, and markings can be quite normal, especially if the parent dogs have varied genetics. However, if the puppy looks different in a way that concerns you—like being smaller, weaker, or having unusual physical features—there might be more to consider.

A puppy that’s smaller or weaker could be what's known as a "runt." These little ones can sometimes struggle with feeding, staying warm, and gaining weight. If this is the case, you can help by ensuring the puppy is nursing well. You might gently guide it to the mother’s teats or use a clean, soft cloth to stimulate its reflexes like a mom dog would do by licking.

Watch for signs like difficulty breathing, lethargy, or inability to eat, which could indicate a serious condition. Congenital issues, like heart defects, can cause major differences too, in which case they’ll need veterinary attention.

It’s always a good idea to have any concerns about a puppy's health checked by a professional. Why not book a video consult with Dial A Vet? Our team can help assess the situation and guide you further.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
