Our cat lost her voice?

I'm reaching out here because we're feeling a bit worried about our cat, Luna. Over the past couple of days, she's been acting normally—playing, eating, and being her usual playful self—but we've noticed she hasn't been meowing. It's like she's lost her voice or something. We first thought she was just being quiet, but now it's starting to concern us. She tries to meow, but it comes out as a faint raspy whisper, nothing like her usual chirpy self. It's breaking our hearts because she's our little chatterbox and family member. Have any of you experienced something similar with your fur babies? We're not sure if this warrants an immediate trip to the vet or if it’s something we can monitor at home for a bit longer. Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance! 🐱

Answer

Hello! I understand how concerning it can be to notice that your cat has lost her voice. A change in your cat’s meow could be due to several reasons. The most common cause is laryngitis, which is an inflammation of the throat and can happen if your cat has been meowing excessively, encountered an upper respiratory infection, or been exposed to irritants like smoke or dust.

At home, you can try to keep her in a calm, quiet environment to prevent further strain on her voice. Make sure she stays hydrated by offering fresh water and perhaps moistening her usual food with a bit of water to encourage her to eat, which can help keep her throat comfortable.

However, it’s important to watch for other signs that could indicate a more serious issue. If your cat is showing symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, a loss of appetite, or if the hoarseness lasts more than a few days, it’s crucial to seek veterinary care as it may suggest a more serious condition.

I recommend setting up a video consult with a Dial A Vet professional. This way, we can further assess her condition and provide the best guidance tailored to her needs.
