Older dog. Tooth extraction/cleaning quote opinions?

I'm feeling really overwhelmed and could really use some advice. My sweet pup, Max, who’s been by my side for the past 12 years, just got back from the vet. They recommended a tooth extraction and a full dental cleaning, and the quote they gave me is way higher than I anticipated — we're talking close to $1,500! I knew dental issues were common as dogs age, but I never imagined it would be this expensive. I'm torn because I want to do what's best for Max, but that cost feels like a punch in the chest. I’m curious if anyone else has been in a similar situation and if this quote seems fair? Any tips on how to manage this financially would be greatly appreciated, especially since my local options seem limited. I don't want Max in pain any longer than he needs to be, but I’m struggling to figure out the best way to move forward. Thanks in advance for any support or suggestions.

Answer

Hello! It sounds like you’re taking great responsibility for your older dog’s dental health, and that’s wonderful to hear. Dental care is crucial for dogs, especially as they age, since dental disease can affect overall health.

When it comes to tooth extractions and cleanings, it's common for vets to provide quotes that cover various levels of care. These quotes often include the cost of anesthesia, the extraction itself, and any post-operative care. In older dogs, there might be additional considerations due to their age, such as blood work or heart monitoring during the procedure, which can add to the cost but are important for their safety.

At home, you can help by maintaining daily oral hygiene. Try gently brushing your dog’s teeth with a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. However, if your dog has significant tartar buildup or dental issues, professional cleaning is necessary.

Keep an eye out for signs of dental issues like bad breath, difficulty eating, or pawing at the mouth. These could suggest pain or infection and might need prompt attention.

I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can review your dog’s specific needs, help interpret any quotes you’ve received, and offer personalized guidance on the best care plan.
