I'm in need of some advice and maybe a bit of comfort. My sweet old cat, Muffin, who’s been my companion for the past 16 years, has been having trouble getting around lately. It's like her back legs aren’t listening to her brain anymore. She’s wobbling and occasionally losing her balance when she tries to jump on her favorite chair, which she never had trouble with before. She's also been super picky with food, which isn't like her at all. I’m so worried something might be seriously wrong. I've set up an appointment with the vet, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s experienced something similar. How can I make it easier for her to move around in the meantime? Should I be looking at changes in her diet or perhaps supplements? Any tips or even stories about older cats would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for your support!
Hello there! I'm glad you're reaching out about your cat. I understand how concerning it can be to see them have trouble moving around and keeping their balance. These symptoms can be due to several factors, especially as cats age.
One common cause is arthritis, which can make movement painful and lead to less stability. Inner ear infections or issues can also affect balance, so it’s important to observe if your cat is tilting their head or seems disoriented. Neurological problems, such as those due to age-related conditions or more serious illnesses, can also manifest as mobility issues.
At home, you can help your kitty by ensuring they have easy access to their favorite resting spots and food. Consider using ramps or steps if needed. Make sure they stay cozy and warm, as warmth can often ease discomfort.
Keep an eye out for other signs, such as significant weight loss, vomiting, or changes in appetite or behavior, as these could indicate a more serious underlying issue that requires immediate attention.
It's always a good idea to consult with a vet who can assess your cat's condition more thoroughly. I recommend setting up a video consult with a Dial A Vet professional to discuss this further and determine the best care plan for your furry friend.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
