Help, I'm really worried and need some advice on what to do next. My dog, Max, got into something he wasn’t supposed to, and I’m starting to panic a bit. This morning, I found him chewing on a pack of sugar-free gum that must have fallen out of my purse. I immediately took it away, but I’ve been reading about xylitol and how harmful it can be for dogs. I'm not exactly sure how much he actually consumed, and now I’m left wondering if I should rush him to the vet or if there are any first aid steps I can take at home before making that decision. Max seems his usual playful self right now, but I’m nervous about what could happen later on. Any advice or similar experiences would be immensely appreciated. I just want to make sure he’s going to be okay.
Thanks for reaching out with your concern! It's not odd at all to worry about toxicity in dogs, as they tend to explore the world with their mouths, and some things can be potentially harmful to them.
Dogs can be affected by a wide range of everyday items, including certain foods like chocolate, grapes, and onions, as well as household products like antifreeze, rat poison, and some cleaning supplies. Even some plants, such as lilies and sago palms, can be toxic to dogs. Symptoms of poisoning to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, drooling, tremors, and seizures.
If you suspect your dog has ingested something harmful, it’s important to act quickly. While waiting for professional advice, you can keep your pet comfortable and try to identify what they may have eaten. Make sure they have access to fresh water but don’t induce vomiting unless directed by a vet, as this can sometimes do more harm than good.
If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned or if you're unsure about a specific substance your dog may have encountered, it's best to consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible. I highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our experts here at Dial A Vet to discuss your specific situation and any necessary next steps. We're here to help!
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately.
