Not sure what to do about the dried blood on my cats incision area after spay

I’m really worried and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Luna, was spayed about a week ago, and she’s been healing pretty well. But today, I noticed some dried blood around her incision area. I’m not sure if this is normal or if I should be freaking out right now. The incision doesn’t look red or swollen—at least not from what I can tell, but I’m also not a vet. Luna has been acting mostly normal, a little less energetic, but I figured that's part of healing. I’m terrified of cleaning it and accidentally hurting her or making it worse. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I be rushing her to the vet, or is this typical recovery stuff? I just want to make sure my little girl is okay. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It's quite common to feel worried when you notice dried blood on your cat's spay incision. After surgery, it's normal for a small amount of blood to appear, which can dry and form a slight crust. This is usually not a cause for alarm. However, it’s important to observe for other signs to ensure everything is healing well.

Gently clean around the incision with a damp, soft cloth and warm water, being careful not to scrub the area. This should remove any dried blood without irritating the healing tissue. Make sure to keep your cat from licking the incision or being too active, as this can interfere with healing. Using an Elizabethan collar can help prevent this.

Watch for signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, or any oozing pus. Also, be on the lookout for increased warmth around the area or if your cat seems particularly uncomfortable or lethargic. If you see these signs, or if the bleeding continues, it’s important to seek veterinary care.
