Question:

Not eaten for a month?!

I’m really worried and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Whiskers, hasn’t been eating properly for almost a month now, and I’m at my wit’s end. He used to devour his food the moment it hit the bowl, but now he just sniffs and walks away. I've tried switching up his food, going from wet to dry, and even resorted to cooking him some chicken, but nothing seems to entice him. I’ve taken him to the vet twice, and they ran some tests but didn’t find anything obviously wrong. They suspect it might be stress-related because we moved recently, but I’ve done everything to make our new place feel like home for him. He’s losing weight and seems so lethargic. Watching him like this is breaking my heart, and I just don't know what else to do. Has anyone experienced something similar, or does anyone have any suggestions for encouraging him to eat again? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Hi there! It's concerning to hear that your pet hasn't eaten for such an extended period. Let's go over some potential reasons and what you can do at home.

Loss of appetite can be due to a variety of factors, including stress, dental issues, digestive problems, or even more serious underlying conditions like kidney or liver disease. It's important to observe whether your pet is exhibiting any other symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss, as these can give us more clues.

At home, you can try offering your pet a range of foods to entice them, such as warm, soft, or specially-prepared meals. Sometimes a change in texture or temperature can make food more appealing. Ensure they have fresh water at all times and monitor their drinking habits.

However, if your pet truly hasn’t eaten for a month, this is definitely a serious concern. It’s crucial to look out for signs like extreme weakness, sunken eyes, or changes in behavior, as these may indicate a critical situation.

For a comprehensive assessment and personalized advice, it's best to book a video consult with one of our veterinarians here at Dial A Vet. We’re here to help you get to the root of the problem and guide you in taking the best possible care of your cherished companion.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
