Next steps for cat's herniated disk and litterbox issues

Help, I really don’t know what to do right now! My sweet cat, Muffin, has been diagnosed with a herniated disk, and it’s just breaking my heart to see her in pain. She's always been so playful and active, but lately, she's been having such a hard time moving around. On top of that, she's suddenly been avoiding her litterbox and doing her business on the floor instead, which is so unlike her. I’m wondering if it's because she's finding it painful to jump in and out of the box? The vet suggested some treatment options, but the information was a bit overwhelming, and I’m terrified of doing anything that might make things worse. Has anyone gone through something similar with their cat? What worked for you? I’m desperate for advice on how to manage both the pain and the litterbox situation. Thank you so much in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat's herniated disk and litterbox issues. I'm here to help you navigate these challenges.

Herniated disks in cats can occur when the cushioning disks between their vertebrae rupture or are forced out. This can lead to pain, mobility issues, and in some cases, affect their bladder control—hence the litterbox problems you're noticing. It's important to be gentle with your cat and limit activities that could strain their spine, like jumping or sudden movements.

At home, you can try creating a comfortable resting area with soft bedding that's easy for your cat to access. Encourage them to rest as much as possible, and offer support when moving them. Monitor your cat's litterbox habits closely. If they seem to be avoiding the box purely due to location difficulty, try a more accessible setup.

Keep an eye out for signs of worsening pain, inability to move, or complete loss of bladder control. If any of these occur, it's critical to seek a vet's guidance immediately.
