Question:

New vet suggests removing canned/wet food from our picky eater dog's diet. He has no suggestions on what to replace it with.

I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed and confused right now and could really use some advice. We recently went to a new vet for our dog Max, who’s always been a bit of a picky eater. The vet recommended that we stop giving Max canned or wet food altogether, but here’s the kicker: he didn’t offer any suggestions about what we should replace it with! Max has always turned his nose up at dry kibble, and I’m at a complete loss about how to make sure he’s getting the right nutrition. I’m really worried about making such a big change to his diet without knowing if I'm doing it right. Have any of you had to switch your dog from wet to dry food, or have other suggestions for feeding a picky eater? I’m open to anything at this point and just want to do what’s best for Max. Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any help you can give!

Answer:

Hello there! It's great that you're looking into your dog's diet, especially with them being a picky eater. Removing wet food might be a suggestion linked to issues like dental health, obesity, or digestive concerns, but it's crucial to find a suitable and nutritious replacement.

Dogs are individuals, and what works for one might not fit another. Transitioning your dog to dry kibble can be a good option, as many are balanced nutritionally. When choosing kibble, consider one formulated for your dog's age, size, and any specific health needs. Introduce it gradually by mixing it with their current food over a week to help with digestion and acceptance.

You might also explore incorporating homemade options, like cooked lean proteins and vegetables, but ensure you're meeting all their nutritional requirements, as this can be complex.

Keep an eye out for any changes in your dog's behavior, appetite, or stool that could indicate trouble adjusting, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. This could signal a more serious issue that needs attention.

If you're unsure about how to make this dietary change, or if you notice worrying signs, consider booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can help tailor a nutrition plan specifically for your furry friend.

Take care, and we’re here if you need us!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
