My turtle is bleeding from mouth after fall

Help, I’m freaking out a bit here! My little turtle, Sam, just took a tumble off the side of his tank while I was cleaning it this morning. I didn’t think it was a big deal at first because he’s always been pretty tough, but now there’s this tiny bit of blood coming from his mouth, and I’m really worried. It’s never happened before, and I can tell he’s acting kind of off—he hasn’t moved much and normally he’s pretty active in the afternoons. Have any of you experienced something similar? I can’t tell if I should be rushing him to a vet right now or if I’m just overreacting. Any advice would be appreciated!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. Seeing your turtle bleeding from the mouth is understandably worrisome, and you're doing the right thing by reaching out for help. A fall can cause various injuries to turtles, such as trauma to the mouth and beak, or even to internal structures if the impact was severe.

Firstly, gently check your turtle for visible injuries. If there’s a loose or broken piece of the shell, it could indicate a more serious injury. Meanwhile, ensure that any bleeding has stopped by gently applying pressure with a clean, damp cloth. Do this cautiously, as turtles are easily stressed and can be sensitive if they're in pain.

In some cases, the bleeding might also be due to a small cut or abrasion inside the mouth. It’s important to create a calm environment, limit handling, and encourage your turtle to rest in a quiet, warm area.

Keep an eye out for signs of more serious trouble, such as continuous bleeding, difficulty breathing, reduced responsiveness, or significant swelling around the mouth. If you observe any of these, it's crucial to get professional help as soon as possible.

To ensure your turtle gets the best care, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. The sooner we can assess the situation, the better we'll be able to guide you on the next steps!
