My senior dog had seizures and I'm looking for closure

so something really strange just happened with my old boy Max, and I’m kinda freaking out here. It was around 2 AM when all of a sudden he started shaking and twitching on the floor, like he was having a seizure, which has never happened before. I was so scared, I didn't know what to do except hold him and talk to him. It lasted for what felt like forever, but in reality, it was probably just a couple of minutes. He’s been quiet and sluggish since then, just lying beside me without his usual wagging tail. He’s 13 and I know he’s getting up there in age, but this is new and so unexpected. Has anyone been through something similar? I’m not sure what this means or how worried I should be. Just looking for some advice or maybe just some peace of mind.

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried about your senior dog's seizures. Seizures can be alarming, especially if you've never seen your dog experience one before. In older dogs, seizures can be caused by a variety of issues such as brain tumors, metabolic disorders, or even toxins. It's essential to work with your vet to pinpoint the exact cause.

For at-home care, ensure your dog is in a safe environment during a seizure to prevent injury, such as clearing the area of sharp objects and cushioning their head with a soft item. Keep track of the frequency, duration, and characteristics of the seizures, as this information can be vital for your vet.

It's critical to monitor for signs that might indicate a more serious issue. If your dog experiences a seizure that lasts longer than a few minutes, multiple seizures in a short period, or doesn't recover between episodes, these are definite signals to seek veterinary help immediately.

Considering your concern for closure and your dog's well-being, I recommend setting up a video consult with Dial A Vet. A vet can help better assess your dog's condition and talk you through the next steps for managing and treating the seizures effectively.
