Question:

My puppy died hours after being neutered

I'm really struggling right now and could use some advice or comfort. Yesterday, I took my beautiful 6-month-old Golden Retriever, Max, to get neutered. I did everything by the book and followed the vet's recommendations, but just hours after we got home, he started acting really lethargic and out of sorts. I figured he was just groggy from the anesthesia, but then he suddenly collapsed and that was it. I’m devastated and can’t stop blaming myself. I called the vet, who said complications are rare but can happen, which isn’t bringing me much comfort right now. Has anyone else gone through something like this? Is there anything I should be asking the vet? I’m heartbroken and feel so guilty, like I should have noticed something was off sooner. Any insights would mean so much to me right now.

Answer:

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to experience something like this, and it's understandable to have questions. When a puppy passes away after a procedure like neutering, there can be various reasons.

Complications from anesthesia are one possibility, as puppies can sometimes have reactions or underlying conditions that make anesthesia risky. There’s also the risk of bleeding complications or undiscovered health issues that might have contributed.

At home, signs such as excessive bleeding, severe lethargy, difficulty breathing, or unresponsiveness shortly after surgery can indicate serious complications. If these signs were present, they could have been warning signs of distress.

It’s important to connect with your vet to discuss what happened. They can provide a more detailed understanding of what could have occurred and whether any specific circumstances might have contributed.

I know this is a difficult time for you. If you’d like, we can arrange a video consultation through Dial A Vet to discuss this further and provide any support or answers you need. Feel free to reach out at any time if there's anything more I can do to help.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
