If your pregnant dog is experiencing small contractions for an extended period without producing any puppies, it's a significant concern and could indicate a dytocia (difficult birth). Typically, once active labor begins with noticeable contractions, a puppy should be born within 60 minutes. If more than 2-4 hours pass between puppies, or if persistent strong contractions occur for over 30 minutes without a puppy, it's an emergency. This is an emergency - please take your pet to your nearest emergency veterinary clinic immediately for assessment. Delays can be life-threatening for both the mother and the puppies.
